CHAPTER 25

A half hour later, as my sister sipped a glass of pinot noir and tried to decide what she was having for dinner, I excused myself from the table and headed across the restaurant.

“Are you Bibi?” I asked the woman behind the bar.

She was tall and slim, with cocoa skin, short dreadlocks and dazzling eyes. I remembered seeing her the last time I came in with Olivia and her family. There was something infectious about her smile and when she answered my question I heard the lyrical cadence of a Jamaican accent.

“I am Bibi,” she said. “Can I help you with a beverage?”

I shook my head. “I’m actually eating over there with my sister,” I explained, pointing at Olivia. “I already have something to drink at the table. But there is something else that I think you can do for me.”

She smiled. “What might that be?”

“My friend Lois told me to come see you,” I said, lowering my voice. “She said that you’re holding something for me.”

The woman’s eyes narrowed slightly before an enormous grin blossomed on her face.

“Kate Reed,” she said. “You’re much prettier in person.”

I flinched slightly from surprise. I was certain that I’d never met Bibi. With her stunning beauty and regal bearing, I definitely would’ve noticed her at Sky High Pies. Not to mention that Harper would’ve gushed about how jealous she was of Bibi’s flawless complexion.

“How do you know me?” I asked.

She smiled. “Lois showed me your website. We were having a glass of wine one evening and she asked if I would do her a favor. Of course, I said yes, and then she opened her laptop and pulled up the site for Sky High Pies. Then she said, ‘If my friend Kate ever comes to see you, give her this envelope.’”

I held up the small envelope. “This one?”

She nodded. “Yes. I never asked what it was about because I trust Lois implicitly. We met a few weeks after she bought her place in Aspen and discovered almost instantly that we had so much in common.”

“That’s always nice with a new friend,” I said.

She took a deep breath. “Some of it’s bad,” she said. “But more of it is good: what we studied in school, the kind of music we like, our favorite brand of shampoo.” She giggled. “As you can tell, it’s a mix of regular things from a regular life.”

“And now Lois’s regular life has gone way off the rails,” I said.

Bibi leaned across the bar. “I was wondering about that,” she said, lowering her voice. “Is she safe?”

“I have faith that she will be,” I said. “But we have a few miles to go before we get there.”

The sparkle in her eyes had been replaced by a blend of fear and confusion.

“I’ve been fretting about her since she was here last week,” Bibi said. “There were three others with Lois that night. I had a bad feeling deep in my bones that something evil was afoot.”

“Do you know who they were?” I asked.
